Accessing the Artorias of the Abyss expansion in Dark Souls can be a surprisingly elusive process for players exploring Lordran. Unlike modern games that grant direct menu access, this classic expansion requires completing several specific steps across multiple late-game areas. Understanding these mandatory requirements and exact entry locations ensures you do not miss out on some of the series' most iconic boss battles.
Key Prerequisites and Story Milestones Needed
Before you can begin hunting for the expansion entrance, you must reach key progression points in the main storyline. Obtaining and placing the Lordvessel is an absolute necessity, as it grants fast travel and unlocks the Golden Fog Gates guarding late-game zones. Without access to the Duke's Archives, you cannot acquire the critical quest item required to open the gateway.
It is strongly recommended to attempt this expansion content late in your playthrough before facing the final boss. Defeating the final boss instantly forces your character into New Game Plus, which locks the DLC behind story progression once again. Preparing a fully upgraded weapon and standard supplies beforehand will give you a vital edge against the formidable challenges ahead.
Rescuing Dusk of Oolacile in Darkroot Basin
Your journey begins in Darkroot Basin, where you must locate and defeat the towering Hydra lurking in the lake. Once the creature is slain, navigate along the left cliff side of the water toward the cavern at the far back. If the path is clear, quit and reload your game to force the next event to trigger.
Upon reloading, a Golden Crystal Golem will spawn near the back cave wall. Defeat this golem to free Dusk of Oolacile, who will appear in its place after the battle. Exhaust her dialogue and accept her request to establish the essential flag for the next stage.
Obtaining the Broken Pendant in Duke's Archives
With Dusk freed, make your way to the Duke's Archives located past the main courtyard of Anor Londo. Shortly after riding the first elevator up into the archives entrance, you will encounter a unique Blue Crystal Golem standing in the corner. This enemy only appears if you have already saved Dusk of Oolacile.
Defeat this specific golem to receive the Broken Pendant key item directly into your inventory. If the item does not drop, double-check that you properly spoke to Dusk in the basin earlier. With the pendant in hand, you hold the ultimate key to opening the realm of Oolacile.
Entering the Portal to Sanctuary Garden
Return once more to the deep cavern in Darkroot Basin where you previously defeated the Golden Crystal Golem. In place of the golem, a swirling dark vortex will now hover above the water. This shadowy rift serves as the official entrance point to the ancient land.
Approach the portal and interact with it to trigger a dramatic cutscene that pulls you into the past. You will arrive safely in the Sanctuary Garden, the introductory zone of the expansion. Rest at the nearby bonfire immediately to set your spawn location before taking on the fierce guardian waiting ahead.
